Wulff Slapped with Violation
Written by magic
Wednesday, 11 February 2009 12:38

Paul Wulff was diciplined by the NCAA with a "failure to monitor" citation, stemming from activities under his watch while at EWU.

Specifically, the NCAA is coming down on EWU and Wulff for:

  • Participation of non-qualifiers in football practices
  • Utilizing 13 to 15 coaches, versus the NCAA limit of 11
  • Providing two student-athletes with housing and meals before classes began

On the surface, I'm sure all the Sarkheisel  External linkfollowers will snicker and gloat over the rightous Cougs having our squeakly-clean coach run through the mud...

They have a point, but it's not apples to apples with the situation at UW.

Wulff's violation came while he was a first-time Head Coach at a Division II program.   Sarkisan's violations are coming while he is a first time head coach at a Division I program.

Wulff's are all procedural and logistical violations, wheras Sarkisian's are, debatably, ethical and even reckless recruiting violations.

Wulff's would have no direct bearing on the success of the program-- all three vilations pertain to practice, not players or games.  By contrast, Sarkisian's violations are all recruiting related, which when he gets away with it, would have a direct effect on the players that come to play for him at UW.

Most importantly, Wulff's violations are in the past and at a different school-- which for the WSU football program, means our coach has learned lessons the hard way, but on EWU's dime.  Sarkisians' violations are at his new program, right under the nose of the Athletic Director and boosters, and if continued, could have a direct impact on the program he currently runs.

In short, I'll take Wulff's three-day slap on the wrist over Sarkisian's ongoing transgressions any day of the week.

This is a tough one for me.....

I think the biggest issue with this is that Wulff clearly had absolutely no administration coverage at EWU over an extended period of time. There really was no one for him to check with on compliance for practice, recruiting, or procedural matters. In fact, you could even argue that it's shocking he didn't have more in the way of violations simply because trying to be a head coach with no budget and without anyone to help on oversight or at least provide feedback on how you're procedurally running your program is a near impossible task. I mean, Sarkheisel hasn't been able to adequately recruit for more than two weeks without violating some sort of rule.
The thing that sucks about it is that we do lose that "moral high ground" against the clowns over at Montlake when recruiting. I'm fine with the punishment and this really hasn't affected how I view Wulff as a manager of a program.
Wulff is still fine

The issues outlined are really minor...ineligible players practicing and too many coaches? Pretty weak in my mind, although they ARE violations. Wulff will be on a much tighter restriction leash in Pullman so hopefully that is all behind him. I just feel sorry for Eastern who got hit pretty hard on this one.
Back off Wulff

I don't feel as sorry for EWU as I do for Wulff. I think he should have been backed by a more competent AD, therefore the punishment should be focused only on EWU and not Wulff. The fact that he is being attributed with these violations is humiliating enough for a coach who is dealing with all the bullshit he walked into at WSU. Now having to deal with attending and paying for these three years of NCAA rules seminars (while EWU is on probation) is just adding salt to the wound.
works out great for us

Screw Eastern. This works out great, the Cougs don't get any (real) penalty but Wulff gets a good lesson about compliance.
No remorse for Eastern

Seriously, this is an administrative issue. If they were even mildly competent at keeping leadership in place they would have been able to help with compliance. That is the role of an athletic department. That's why Sterk talks about a culture of compliance at WSU. It really is a culture. Look at the culture of cheating at UW. There is a reason why you see absurd things like epidemic drug problems on the softball team, recruiting vioalations in basketball, recruiting violations in football, and goodness know what else.

I will say this though blackdeath. Those issues aren't minor. As described in the Eastern situation they are. But they are considered major violations because you can imagine a scenario where a school with resources like SC would just hire 50 assistant coaches on a staff or imagine having Drew Bledsoe come back and practice with the team the year after he retired even if not on staff. The rules are there to try and keep an even playing field.

Westward, the violations that they got busted are minor in my eyes b/c there are so many WORSE things that he could have done. Of course the worse case scenario is bad but I don't think that happened there.

Big picture was outlined by Phil Opian above...violations were done elsewhere and now Wulff has a lesson learned. Sterk and his crew won't let that happen.

What pisses me off are the jackholes on KJR that are spouting how if Wulff did this at Eastern who knows what he is doing at WSU. They have no clue and are just causing their typical high school girl drama. I can't wait for that station to go under and 710 AM to go sports. But that is another thread.
Great Site!

Hat's off to the Magic Man for putting together a much-needed site to spread the good word of all things Coug!

I can't get too worked up about these violations and being the cup-half-full guy that I am, can see Wulff using this as a great motivator for the year. We should have a poll for where Wulff should hang out during the 3 practices he has to sit out.
