Paul Wulff was diciplined by the NCAA with a "failure to monitor" citation, stemming from activities under his watch while at EWU. Â Specifically, the NCAA is coming down on EWU and Wulff for: - Participation of non-qualifiers in football practices
- Utilizing 13 to 15 coaches, versus the NCAA limit of 11
- Providing two student-athletes with housing and meals before classes began
On the surface, I'm sure all the Sarkheisel followers will snicker and gloat over the rightous Cougs having our squeakly-clean coach run through the mud...
 Â
They have a point, but it's not apples to apples with the situation at UW.Wulff's violation came while he was a first-time Head Coach at a Division II program. Â Sarkisan's violations are coming while he is a first time head coach at a Division I program. Â Wulff's are all procedural and logistical violations, wheras Sarkisian's are, debatably, ethical and even reckless recruiting violations. Wulff's would have no direct bearing on the success of the program-- all three vilations pertain to practice, not players or games. Â By contrast, Sarkisian's violations are all recruiting related, which when he gets away with it, would have a direct effect on the players that come to play for him at UW. Â Most importantly, Wulff's violations are in the past and at a different school-- which for the WSU football program, means our coach has learned lessons the hard way, but on EWU's dime. Â Sarkisians' violations are at his new program, right under the nose of the Athletic Director and boosters, and if continued, could have a direct impact on the program he currently runs. In short, I'll take Wulff's three-day slap on the wrist over Sarkisian's ongoing transgressions any day of the week. Â

The thing that sucks about it is that we do lose that "moral high ground" against the clowns over at Montlake when recruiting. I'm fine with the punishment and this really hasn't affected how I view Wulff as a manager of a program.
I will say this though blackdeath. Those issues aren't minor. As described in the Eastern situation they are. But they are considered major violations because you can imagine a scenario where a school with resources like SC would just hire 50 assistant coaches on a staff or imagine having Drew Bledsoe come back and practice with the team the year after he retired even if not on staff. The rules are there to try and keep an even playing field.
Big picture was outlined by Phil Opian above...violations were done elsewhere and now Wulff has a lesson learned. Sterk and his crew won't let that happen.
What pisses me off are the jackholes on KJR that are spouting how if Wulff did this at Eastern who knows what he is doing at WSU. They have no clue and are just causing their typical high school girl drama. I can't wait for that station to go under and 710 AM to go sports. But that is another thread.
I can't get too worked up about these violations and being the cup-half-full guy that I am, can see Wulff using this as a great motivator for the year. We should have a poll for where Wulff should hang out during the 3 practices he has to sit out.
